Lux Umbra focuses on documenting real people doing real things.

Also doing business as Matthew Rakola Photography, Lux Umbra has evolved in response to the new reality in the communications world–many clients no longer simply need photographs, but rather a broader range of visual assets including traditional video and social media content, as well as a visual strategy to make them effective. Leveraging personal and professional connections made over 20 years in the industry, Lux Umbra can scale services to handle its clients’ changing needs. Whether working on location or in studio, we have the skills and experience across various sectors to manage projects of all sizes. Let us know how we can help you!

About the Photographer

Matthew Rakola (né Hakola) is a proud Maine native. He received his degree in commercial photography from Syracuse University and began his working career in the Boston area, first as a college photographer, and then as a staff photographer at a busy commercial studio photographing some of the largest companies in the North East. He began working independently in 2006, and relocated to the Washington, D.C. area in 2010 where he opened Lux Umbra, d.b.a. Matthew Rakola Photography.

He and his wife live in Silver Spring with their two sons, a dwindling number of fish, a hamster, and–if the kids have their way–a dog sooner rather than later. When not trying to find the missing fish, feeding the hamster, or fielding questions about dog breeds, you might find him scuba diving or walking the Chesapeake Bay looking for fossilized shark teeth. Yes, it’s a thing.
